Television

If you are in New Bedford, watch Cable Public Access Channel 95 every Thursday from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. to view a Branco Events Softball League game!

Your announcers are Bob Branco, Frank Smith and/or Sean Sousa, and camera work is provided by Frank Smith, Sean Sousa and/or Minister Paul.

The Branco Events Softball League is involved in a new promotion. During each game that we broadcast on Channel 95 in New Bedford, as of Thursday, May 7, I will be asking a trivia question. If anyone guesses the question correctly by calling the Branco Events office, their name will be placed in a drawing for a grand prize package at the end of the regular season.

The prize package will consist of a varsity jacket with the words, "I Support Branco Events Softball" on the back, and the winner's name on the front, dinner for two at the Pasta House, and the opportunity to be a guest during one of our play-off game broadcasts. This contest will begin as of the May 7th broadcast on Channel 95. It's obvious that anyone who participates in the contest will be watching Branco Events Softball faithfully, and may tell others to watch the games.

Also tune into Sports Round Table, Bob Branco's weekly sports talk show on Cable Public Access Channel 95 every Tuesday at 6 PM. Watch an episode online!

As I See It: From a Blind Man's Perspective

New Book Presents Author's Own Experiences with Blindness

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - For most of us, it is one of the most unimaginable, frightening afflictions: blindness. In his new book, As I See It: From a Blind Man's Perspective (published by AuthorHouse), Robert Theodore Branco takes readers by the hand, leading them from the light into the dark as he describes how he has adapted to a life without sight.

As I See It provides a detailed account of the issues facing blind individuals on two levels. First, Branco discusses his perceptions and personal experiences on topics such as self-esteem, handling money, job discrimination, and the high cost of leading an independent life. In addition he addresses frequently asked questions and sets the record straight on several myths. Second, Branco delves into the facts concerning adaptive technology, legislation protecting the blind, and securing employment.

Branco has found that many blind people feel intimidated by the circumstances of their disability, and more importantly, by the lack of effort with which society has embraced them. As I See It chronicles Branco's own struggle to adapt and gain independence in an indifferent, unaccommodating world, and his commitment to remaining positive.

Having had partial sight as a child, Branco is in a unique position to assist the reader in understanding what it's like to be blind. It's a skill he acquired at an early age:

Indeed, I went through it all! I wish I had been paid one dollar every time I had to tell someone how many fingers they had showing. The whole thing was tedious and quite boring to say the least. I knew what I could see and what I couldn't, but people were so curious to find out that I had to show them. . If I didn't explain this entire process in detail and simply told you that I had partial sight, it might appear as though I had more sight than I actually did. . Although I saw human shapes and lighted signs, I couldn't identify them very often.

Despite having a bachelor's degree in finance, Robert Theodore Branco has been out of work more than he'd care to admit, but that has not stopped him from leading an active life. Currently he is the editor of a consumer magazine. He runs a slow-pitch softball league and a league for bowlers with disabilities, and he holds a support group for visually-impaired people. As I See It is his first book.

Funding

We are a slow-pitch, co-ed adult league, whose players range in age from 17 to 76. Our games are played on two fields this season: Buttonwood Park in New Bedford and Jones Beach field in South Dartmouth. In order to secure the field permits, Branco Events had to raise a lot of money to cover insurance costs, equipment costs, umpire fees, etc. We had a fund-raiser during the winter, however, a great deal of our revenue came from our dedicated sponsors. Each sponsor owns their own team, and has direct input in what goes on the players' uniforms. In return for their investments, the sponsors will be mentioned many times throughout the season in the newspaper, on our web site, and during broadcasts of our games on Channel 95 in New Bedford.

I also have a sports talk show on Channel 95 in New Bedford and on the internet, and I will give a weekly report of the league standings.

If you or someone you know would like to purchase a team, please email me or call the Branco Events office at 508-994-4972.

Funding for Branco Events softball teams is comprised of:

  • The Branco Softball League is planning a few fund raisers, including a yard sale. If you have any questions, please call 508-994-4972 or email us.
  • Business sponsorships for our team uniforms
  • Annual player registration fees that cover general operating expenses including equipment, insurance, and any other miscellaneous items
  • Occasional fundraisers such as car washes, yard sales, and other approved activities proposed by team members
  • Donations of cash or in kind from individuals or local business

League Season

Our game schedule runs from April August. Each team will play 24 games, 3 games against each of the other eight teams. There are also 27 built-in slots throughout the schedule for practice sessions or make-up games.

We play our games every Monday at Buttonwood Park from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at Jones Beach from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10:00, 11:45 and 1:30 at Jones Beach.

If you or someone you know would like to contribute to our League, please email me or call 508-994-4972 for further details.

Scores & Standings

I would like to announce the 2009 awards for the Branco Softball League regular season. If you received an award, or know one of the recipients, please email or call me so that I can invite them to appear at a Championship game for a small ceremony.

Most Valuable Player, Male: Shaine Robles of Tremblay Bus

Most Valuable Player, Female: Megan Giammalvo of Knuckleheads

Pitcher of the Year: Ron Rodrigues of Kat Man Sports

Coach of the Year: Sean Sousa of Tremblay Bus

Most of the Branco Softball playoff games will be aired on New Bedford Cable Access Channel 95 on Thursdays from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sean Sousa, Frank Smith and I will be announcing many of the games, and at times, while Sean is playing in a game, you will hear other announcers, including our first female announcer, Jackie Faith.

Congratulations go out to Nicole Vieira for winning the Branco Softball Trivia Challenge grand prize drawing for 2009. As a result, she wins dinner for two at the Pasta House, a jacket with the words, "I Support Branco Events Softball", and a guest appearance during one of our remaining playoff games.

Here are the final Branco Softball League team standings for the 2009 season.

First Place, Knuckleheads, 20 wins, 3 losses

Second Place, Kat Man Sports, 20 wins, 4 losses

Third Place, Tremblay Bus, 12 wins, 12 losses

Third Place, Car Tunes, 12 wins, 12 losses

Third Place, INDevelopment Designs and Service, 12 wins, 12 losses

Fourth Place, Dick's Sporting Goods, 10 wins, 14 losses

Fourth Place, Rua's Pizza, 10 wins, 14 losses

Fifth Place, Majestic Movers, 8 wins, 16 losses

Sixth Place, John A. Sylvia III Masonry and Home Improvements, 1 win, 22 losses

You probably noticed that two teams did not play 24 games. On Saturday, August 29, Knuckleheads and Masonry were scheduled to play a "meaningless" game, and when it was rained out, all the parties involved agreed that it did not have to be rescheduled.

Meet Bob Branco:
Hi, Everyone. My name is Bob Branco, owner of Branco Events. I am a life-long resident of New Bedford, Massachusetts, born August 12, 1957. For the first several years of my schooling, I was placed in a sight saving class, where we all received special attention due to the small class size as well as our visual deficiencies. When I reached the fifth grade, the State of Massachusetts could no longer accommodate me locally, so I was sent to the Perkins School for the blind in Watertown, Mass, where I graduated from their high school in 1977. I went on to receive an associates degree from Bristol Community College in Business Administration, and then obtained my Bachelors' degree in Finance at Southeastern Massachusetts University.

I belonged to many community-minded organizations over the years, and became well-versed in coordinating activities. I ran trips, dances, workshops, class reunions, surprise parties, talent shows, candy sales, car washes, Christmas parties, bowling leagues, softball teams, etc. When I started Branco Events, I was quite confident that my personal experience in planning activities would serve to benefit the business a great deal, and help it become a complete success. As you continue to look through my web sight, you will probably have questions, comments and opinions. Please submit them to me at branco182@worldnet.att.net.
